Difference #1 The collection of ideas
The Democrat Party prefers a collection of viewpoints that come from liberal, left wing political thought. Ideas presented in blue on this blog. The Democrats are seated on the left side as they enter the Capital building. The Democrat's mascot is the Donkey. They are often represented by the color blue on election maps. Sometimes Democrats call themselves "Progressives"

The Republican Party prefers a collection of viewpoints that come from conservative, right wing political thought. Ideas presented in red on this blog. The Republicans are seated on the right side as they enter the Capital building. The Republican's mascot is the Elephant. They are often represented by the color red on election maps. Sometimes Republicans call themselves the "Grand Old Party" or "GOP"

Political parties are united by a collection of viewpoints on a variety of issues and ideas. Many issues are presented in 2 opposing viewpoints typically trying to make something legal or illegal. The 2 most popular viewpoint collections are held by (in alphabetical order);

Republicans; http://www.rnc.org who's collection of political viewpoints is called "right wing" or "conservative"

   A Democrat or a Republican who agrees with a somewhat equal number of left wing and right wing viewpoints would be considered amoderate or a centrist; someone who's collection of political viewpoints is in the "center" between left and right. A moderate could be a member of either party and is more likely to switch from one party to another. This makes it difficult for them to advance to positions of power within their own party since some of their viewpoints are in agreement with the opposition.
   3rd parties generally have a collection of viewpoints that include some Democrat viewpoints and some Republican viewpoints, and any opposing positions to those (rare, if any) viewpoints that both Democrats and Republicans agree on.
   Collections of political viewpoints are sometimes referred to as "party platforms" or "political philosophy". Less popular collections of "political philosophy" are held by 3rd parties like (Also in alphabetical order);

Difference #2 The Death Penalty

Difference #5 Fear of change
Democrats fear changes in the Earth,
Republicans fear changes in Society;
   Democrats want to protect the Earth from what they see as harmful changes. They work to restore the environment of Earth to its original unaltered form. To prevent events like urban sprawl or global warming.
Democrats easily tolerate, or adapt to, changes in Society. Democrats will fight to protect the liberty of those who are involved with new society changing activities even though they may not agree with, or want to participate in, those activities.
Society changing activities like; homosexual marriage or assisted suicide.
   Republicans want to protect Society from what they see as harmful changes. They work to restore the structure of society to its original unaltered form. To prevent events like changing the management of health care from private to public or the redefinition of marriage.
Republicans easily tolerate, or adapt to, changes in the Earth. Republicans will fight to protect the liberty of those who are involved with new Earth changing activities even though they may not agree with, or want to participate in, those activities.
Earth changing activities like; drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico or driving large, gasoline thirsty, SUV vehicles.

Difference #6 Guns
The debate on firearms is sometimes referred to as the
"2nd Amendment" where it is found in the U.S.Constitution.

Democrats see guns as an offensive tool of aggression.
They see the government as the best means of protecting citizens.
For Democrats the dangers and risks outweigh the benefits and enjoyment of private gun ownership. They believe that increasing the number of guns owned by private citizens decreases the government's ability to restrain and control the public in the event of a national crisis, which could result in the collapse of our free American society.

The Democrats demand more accountability from corporations than from social government (not military) .
To Democrats the larger and more powerful the social government becomes the greater its ability to enhance society with more affordable, efficient and innovative, products and services. They favor having the government take over (socialize) where they see the private corporations failing.
Corporate America's health care system is an example of what the Democrats
would say the Federal Government could better manage

Difference #8 Laffer Curve Economics
   Democrats believe the Federal Government is on the left side of the Laffer curve. They believe that if federal taxes are increased then the total amount of federal taxes collected will also increase. And if federal taxes are decreased then the total amount of federal taxes collected will also decrease.
   Republicans believe the Federal Government is on the right side of the Laffer curve. They believe that if federal taxes are decreased then the total amount of federal taxes collected will increase. And if federal taxes are increased then the total amount of federal taxes collected will decrease.

   The Arthur Laffer curve is an economic principle that states that as taxes rise, total taxes collected also increase until it reaches a peak where it begins to fall. When taxes are low, a government will be able to collect most of the taxes and fees it demands from its people.
But, according to the Laffer principle, as taxes become excessive, tax payers will start doing things to avoid paying excessive taxes. Things like cheating, not reporting an income or moving across a border to avoid the tax or they might quit a taxable business because the financial reward will be less. All this is supposed to decrease the total taxes collected represented by LC in the graph; (Graph will not properly display on a cell phone)

The graph shows taxes "X" increasing over a time span. The government's total taxes collected, represented by LC "The Laffer Curve", begins increasing on the left side of the curve where taxes are low and decreasing on the right side where taxes are high. The lack of information, on how much tax is not being collected from tax cheaters or tax avoiders, is the basis for understanding why the 2 parties disagree over where the federal government is currently located on the Laffer curve.

Difference #9 Fiscal Economic Policy
   Democrats prefer demand side, Keynesian economic fiscal policy. Basically, a policy that empowers the government to spend more money which then helps to stimulate the economy. Democrats favor government correcting the unfairness created by "capitalistic free market forces"

Difference #10 Government and Groups
   Democrats tend to favor protecting smaller civic groups from being constrained or forced to conform to the will of a larger, more powerful civic group. To grant smaller civic groups freedoms that might be unacceptable with other larger, more powerful civic groups. An example of protecting smaller civic groups (the homosexual community) from being forced to conform to a larger civic group (the heterosexual community) is how the Democrat Party favors allowing homosexual couples the same rights and privileges as heterosexual married couples.This favor towards the weak is just the opposite with government groups, meaning, Democrats tend to favor having smaller governments conform to the will of a larger, more powerful centralized government. An example of having smaller governments (states) conform to a larger government (federal) is that the Democrats favor having the Federal Government set a national speed limit. Or how the Democrats favor having America (a smaller or subordinate government to the U.N.) follow the lead of the United Nations (a larger, more centralized government) on a U.N. global pollution limiting plan called "the Kyoto Protocol"

Difference #11 Freedom of Speech
   Whenever an individual's self expression in public becomes a political controversy;
   Democrats tend to defend the free speech rights of an individual's public expression of;
1) artistry,
2) sexuality,
3) anti-spirituality and/or
4) anti-nationalism...more often than other expressions.
   Exposing Janet Jackson's breast at the Super Bowl halftime show is both an expression of artistry and sexuality. Suing a public school for allowing a student to wear a shirt with an image of Jesus, is an example of expressing anti-spirituality. Burning the US flag, is an example of expressing anti-nationalism.
   Republicans tend to defend the free speech rights of an individual's public expression of;
1) spirituality,
2) nationalism,
3) anti-artistry and/or
4) anti-sexuality... more often than other expressions.
   Displaying a granite sculpture of the "Ten Commandments" in a capital building, is an example of an expression of spirituality. Reciting the "Pledge of Allegiance" is an example of expressing nationalism. An employer who bans employees from wearing nose rings, is an example of expressing anti-artistry. Protesting a store for selling pornography, is an example of expressing anti-sexuality.

Difference #12 Military
   Democrats tend to prefer to have the military's foreign operations directed by or jointly with an international organization like the United Nations or N.A.T.O. more often than by only Americans and the Pentagon.

   Republicans tend to prefer to have the military's foreign operations directed by only Americans and the Pentagon more often than by or jointly with an international organization like the United Nations or N.A.T.O.

Difference #14 Judging Judges

The words "litmus test" are often used during the process of appointing Federal Judges and Supreme Court Justices; who are reviewed and appointed or rejected by members of Congress. The basic meaning of a "litmus test" is; to determine weather a nominee's personal collection of political viewpoints are in agreement with your own and if not then to reject their appointment. A member of congress with a strong position on the death penalty will want to know a nominee's position on the death penalty before agreeing to promote that nominee to a more powerful judicial position.

   Setting a national speed limit of 55 is an example of transferring power (state power) to a more centralized government (Washington DC)

   Banning the Boy Scouts from military bases because its members pledge an oath to God, is an example of the government censoring public expressions of spirituality.

Difference #18 States Rights
   Should a State have a right to allow something to be legal or illegal within that State's borders or should the Federal government have that authority over all States? Whenever there is a disagreement on this question;
   Democrats tend to favor granting the Federal government the right of authority over States. For example, the Democrats would prefer that the federal government determine the maximum speed limit for all States.
   Republicans tend to favor granting individual State governments the right of authority within its borders. For example, Republicans would prefer that each individual State determine its own speed limit.
   Both parties would break this rule in the name of protecting their own people or viewpoints. The Presidential election 2000 tally hassle in Tallahassee Florida was a good example of breaking this difference. The Democrat Party, who usually favors the Federal government, tried to stop the Federal Government from interfering with the State of Florida's recount. The Republican Party, who usually favors a State government, tried to stop the State of Florida from deciding how to recount.

Difference #19 The United Nations
   Should an individual Nation have a right to allow something to be legal or illegal within that country's borders or should the United Nations have that authority over all Nations? Whenever there is a disagreement on this question;
   Democrats tend to favor granting the United Nations the right of authority over individual Nations. For example, the Democrat party would prefer that America sign on with the United Nations global pollution reducing plan called "the Kyoto Protocol" Democrats see the United Nations as an authority over America and all nations in the same way that the federal government is an authority over all the states.
   Republicans tend to favor protecting the American government's right to govern itself. For example, the Republican party would prefer that each individual Nation set its own pollution reducing laws instead of forcing America to comply with the expensive burdens of the United Nation's Kyoto Protocol. Republicans see the United Nations as a PowWow, or gathering of Chiefs, to share ideas, needs and complaints in the same way that the 50 American state goveners meet to discuss issues.

Difference #20 The Individual
   The Democrat party tends to favor allowing the individual to have final authority in deciding the fate, form and function of that individual's own body.
